AFM News Hour host KP Whaley spoke to Tracy Hawkins about French Broad Outfitters (FBO) and how the FBO People’s Project is trying to save it, as Buncombe County is threatening to close the venue. Hawkins provided a bit of background on the situation. She explained that Buncombe County granted a conservation easement to Riverlink, which they eventually lost. In 2016 FBO was established in Hominy Creek to provide outdoor recreation opportunities to Asheville. In 2021 the easement resurfaced and Riverlink went on to notify Buncombe County. Buncombe County granted FBO permission to finish out its lease, but because FBO is not in compliance with every aspect of the conservation easement, they are set to close in October. Hawkins explained that FBO is in compliance with the majority of the requirements and the only one not fulfilled is Commercial Activity.
Hawkins expressed frustration around the closing of FBO, which so many community members enjoy. It is the goal of the People’s Project to work with Buncombe County and figure out how to navigate the seemingly flexible legal language regarding the lease.
On August 14th, the People’s Project is hosting a “Keep the Creek” Rally at Hi-Wire Brewing RAD to raise awareness and support the effort in renewing FBO’s lease. Doors open at 5pm and music is from 6–8pm. Not only will the event feature music, but attendees can also look forward to raffle prizes and special remarks.
