The hurricane that ravaged western North Carolina in late September of 2024 decimated our ability to present live music from a venue. The Getaway River Bar was all but destroyed by the swelling of the Swannanoa River; with no present plans to rebuild. Undaunted, the team moved their live sessions to utilize previous programming and in studio artists from our performance space at the radio station. We are rebuilding our programming for the calendar year of 2025 and beyond.

Asheville Live Music Sessions is the epitome of Community Radio. The Team is an organized group that specializes in bringing live music from local Asheville, NC music venues to the radio audience. The team is comprised of experts that present music from a local venue presenting local musicians. The Team is responsible for selecting the talent that will be presented, communicating with the venue to confirm details, in-studio monitoring of the signal from the venue; at the venue is the balance of the evening’s required staffing two sound persons to communicate the signal from the venue to the station and from the house board to the stations broadcast board, a stage announcer from the team, and finally a photographer to help chronicle the event.
We coordinate with several of the other departments to assist; primarily with our Publicity crew that promotes the event through social media. “We are creating a connection from venues to our listeners, to hear a live professionally run concert. Not all of our listeners have the ability to get out on a Wednesday night or don’t have the means to see a show.” said Bruce Swan, Team Lead. “I am lucky to have so many hard working selfless team members. This group epitomizes the adage ‘there is no “I” in team; when there is a problem everyone jumps into help out. Teams Win, Coaches lose! So far, no losses!”
The programming has been so successful that the station now budgets to pay a portion of the guarantee to the artists. It is Win, Win, Win, Win. The band can attract new fans at the venue, the venue can attract new patrons, the station can attract new listeners, and The Team Wins!
