This Climate Buzz episode aired on November 11, 2024 with special guest, Lisa Raleigh who is the Executive Director for Riverlink. The show opened with a report on the national, state, and local election results and what this meant for addressing climate change moving forward. Lisa shared her personal story that brought her to Asheville four years ago as well as the history of Riverlink whose founder and first Executive Director of Riverlink, Karen Cragnolin, played a major role cleaning up and protecting the Swannanoa and French Broad Rivers. With a degree in geology, Lisa shared her understanding of how Hurricane Helene’s massive rainfall reached historic levels and how the topography of our mountains and valleys created the massive flooding and mudslides that occurred in Asheville and surrounding mountain communities. Later in the show, Lisa discusses the economic opportunity moving forward to rebuild the River Arts District (RAD) with an emphasis on equity and the consideration of artists and others who lost so much in the flooding and will need support rebuilding homes and businesses.
