103.3 Asheville FM is nonprofit, volunteer-driven, community radio at its best. We offer a diversity of programming as diverse as the community we serve. That includes community journalists producing hyper-focused local news in both English and in Spanish; talk shows that run the gamut from politics to poetry; and the most eclectic freeform mix of music that you can hear – from DJs with a scholarly appreciation for the genres they represent. All of this is from a community of passionate volunteers who want to give the microphone to other members of the community who don’t have the opportunity in other media outlets.
This “sample” of 20 minutes includes clips from five of our approximately 70 shows.
First is Open Air: a new show on Asheville FM that opens up our airwaves for local community organizations working towards equity, justice, health, and accessibility in Asheville and Buncombe County. Each Tuesday at 11 am, tune in to hear programs co-produced by Asheville FM and these community groups
Second is Sweet Tea: a talk/magazine format show that celebrates everything LGBTQ+ in Asheville. We cover news, entertainment, events, and topics of interest to the queer community but also open a window into queer life for our Straight Allies and those interested in learning more.
Third is The Final Straw Radio: a weekly anarchist and anti-authoritarian radio show bringing you voices and ideas from struggle around the world. The Final Straw has been operating since mid-2010 out of from occupied Cherokee land in Southern Appalachia (Asheville, NC) at Asheville FM WSFM-LP, 103.3 FM! The show is currently being rebroadcast on a number of other radio stations around the so-called US.
Fourth is The Climate Buzz: with hosts Dr. Bob Hanna, Kelly Sheehan and Brad Rouse, who share the stories, the people, the science, the challenges and the solutions of a changing climate. The Climate Buzz airs Monday mornings, 9am-10am, on 103.3 AshevilleFM and is streamed live at www.ashevillefm.org.
Fifth is La Neta News: A Spanish Language News and Music Morning Show that airs 6-8am weekdays. The show was introduced during the Pandemic as a way to reach our Spanish speaking community with important updates about Covid-19 in a culturally sensitive way. The show is produced in partnership with JMProTV, a Youtube channel for the Latinx community in Asheville by Julio Tordoya, who also sits on our board of directors.
Sixth is Asheville FM Music Happenings: a show that presents music from the shows and concerts that happen in town each week. The show features live music, interviews, and ticketgiveaways.
Seventh is our Concert & Entertainment Calendar that we offer 3 times a day that lists every show at every venue. This is a labor of love that a team of volunteers puts together each week. We feature everything we can in town. After the calendar Matt The Free Range DJ starts his show, Let There Be Rock featuring Punk, Undergound and obscure classic rock on a theme.
Eighth is Tenor To Tabla: a weekly freeform excursion that may or may not include sublime instrumentals, plucky interludes, double-tracked a cappella mumbling, prepared and unprepared pianos, and indigenous sounds from all eras and all areas.
We think the selections capturs the breadth and diversity of our offerings and our commitment to being a resource for our community.
