Jake Burns –

Raised in the Little Miami River Valley of southern Ohio, Jake Burns began his musical journey at a young age. With the encouragement of his parents, he quickly became connected with music through piano, saxophone, guitar and then finding his voice at the age of 13 began fronting his own band in high school. This group carried over into his college years dubbing themselves Rockstead, a high energy four-piece rock/reggae group that soon took flight throughout the Midwest. Jake is currently writing and performing with Rockstead as they continue to tour throughout the Eastern United States.

After his college years Jake created new roots in Asheville, North Carolina and began to formulate his own songwriting style inspired by love, travel and his personal life experiences of learning and growing. With this new found love for his acoustic driven indie folk/americana style, Jake’s solo project dubbed River The Dog, aims to connect people from all walks of life with his honest lyrics and thoughtful melodies. The release of his first few singles “Dogwood Doll” (Dec. 2023), “Funny How Things Change” (March 2024) and “I Need You To Know” (Aug. 2024) marks only the beginning of River The Dog and the new music he has to share with the world.

Asheville Show!!! —  This Friday – September 13th at One World West Brewing in West Asheville

Rockstead is back for another high-energy rock/reggae party in the mountains of Asheville, NC!

Come hang out for a full night of music at One World Brewing West on Friday September 13th with special guest Pleasantly Wild.

The feeling of love. The power of unity. The essence of happiness. The strength of togetherness and positive vibrations. The highs of living life and the lows of dealing with its obstacles. All of these things encapsulate the music of Cincinnati, OH-born Rockstead, a four-piece, passion driven rock/reggae group.

With roots leading as far back as middle school, Rockstead combines a lifetime full of influences ranging from rock, punk, reggae, jam and metal. In their early days Rockstead ruled the college party scene in Ohio with a schedule full of impromptu house shows leading to packed basements of DIY venues and later, massive crowds attending college fests such as Ohio University’s infamous spring festivals. This early success catalyzed the band’s first recordings which included “Wake Up And Live” (album, 2013), “Rise” (EP, 2014) and “Homegrown” (album, 2016). These releases ignited their inner road warrior leading to a plethora of plays at music festivals and concert venues across the Midwest. Since then, Rockstead continues to widen their reach touring throughout the Eastern U.S. and down into Florida.

Though member changes have occurred over the years, front man singer/guitarist Jake Burns continues to drive the group forward as they have shared stages with international acts such as The Wailers (Jamaica), Sticky Fingers (Australia) and Big Mountain (USA) as well as many national acts like Andy Frasco & The U.N., Giant Panda Guerilla Dub Squad, Badfish, Tropidelic, Little Stranger, Bumpin’ Uglies and Ballyhoo!. The band has now grown to include Nate Anuci (drums) and Stephen Woodard (bass). Rockstead dropped their first studio album “You’re In Control” in September 2020 which scored them multiple features in blogs and podcasts across the scene making them “one of the most unique and special bands in [Cincinnati]” (CincyMusic, 2020). The group continues to expand their catalog with the release of their sophomore studio album “Fall Down. Get Up. Repeat.” in February 2023 with guest appearances from TreeHouse!, The Quasi Kings and Higher Education.

By using their relentless high-energy performances and genre-bending setlists, while aligning their unwavering dedication to the do-it-yourself work ethic, Rockstead shows no sign of slowing down their mission of bringing people together through music.

“Solidarity, Spirituality and Liberatory Promise on a Turtle’s Back” with Ashanti Omowali Alston

“Solidarity, Spirituality and Liberatory Promise on a Turtle’s Back” with Ashanti Omowali Alston

'“Solidarity, Spirituality and Liberatory Promise on a Turtle’s Back” with Ashanti Omowali Alston | TFSR 9-1-24' and a photo of Ashanti Alston smiling at the camera wearing a pork pie hat and making a mask with his fingers in front of his faceThis week, we’re sharing words from anarchist, author, organizer and former participant in the Black Panther and Black Liberation Army,  Ashanti Omowali Alston, in the key note address at the 2024 Another Carolina Anarchist Bookfair in so-called Asheville. The presentation was entitled “Solidarity, Spirituality and Liberatory Promise on a Turtle’s Back”. Hear the full episode at our website.

  • Podcast transcript

From the ACAB website:

Trusting in solidarity, the mysterium of spirituality, and a promise from god knows where—a “where” that at this historical moment, might just be Palestine. What does it mean TO BE in the midst of all this right now? RIGHT NOW!

M. Ashanti Alston is a revolutionary Black nationalist, anarchist, abolitionist, speaker, writer, elder motivator. A long-time member of The Jericho Movement, he is presently an advisory board member of the National Jericho Movement and co-founding board member of the Center for Grassroots Organizing (Vermont land project). He continues giving talks and writing inspirational analyses concerning the dismantling of the myriad oppressive regimes in which we find ourselves enmeshed.

Ashanti is one of the few former members of the Black Panther Party who identifies as an anarchist in the tradition of ancestor Kwesi Balagoon (BPP & BLA). He developed abolitionist politics in the early years of Critical Resistance. He has helped save the life of a baby pig with animal liberationists, learned depth-queer politics from being challenged, and wants to see non-ego eldership partaking through sincerely loving the younger generations who truly want to ‘CARRY IT ON.”

You can find other recordings from the 2024 ACABookfair at acabookfair.noblogs.org.

Portuguese Pop

August 27, 2024 by Kyle C.

On Monday, August 26, Nathan Duvall, DJ of AFM’s show Lucid Pilot, interviewed the talented Raquel Valente, leader of the band 701. Nathan introduced the musician as “an accomplished bandleader, composer, producer, singer and lyricist from Lisbon, Portugal, who plays a unique, futuristic psych-pop.”

Raquel called in from Lisbon, where she lives and creates her music by the coast. She explained that the ocean is an inspiration for much of her music. Raquel talked about her process for creating music: she always begins with the lyrics, often starting on her phone and finishing on her laptop. When asked what instruments she primarily plays, Raquel said she did dabble for a bit with the keyboard, but bass and her voice are the two instruments she loves.

Raquel and Nathan talked a lot about the algorithm of services like Spotify and Tidal and how these apps help them discover music from around the world and across the ages. Raquel noted that Portuguese radio is often focused so much on foreign music that it’s hard for Portuguese artists to break through, so listeners often discover her through the algorithm. She said of being a musician in Portugal: “You just do it ’cause you love doing it and you can’t live without doing it.”

701’s new album is titled Se eu não me divertir, quem é que me diverte?, or If I Don’t Have Fun, Who Will? You can find everywhere her music streams here, and you can listen to her full interview in Lucid Pilot’s archive.

Reflections on Medical Conditions in Gaza by a Recently Returned Nurse

Photo of a bombed hospital in Gaza with rescue workers approaching from the street

Our chat with Louis, an anarchist emergency room nurse who has just returned from a second tour doing healthcare work in Gaza and is about to leave again. During this difficult conversation, we talk about medical conditions that he encountered in Gaza, what aid is getting in and how it’s being distributed, health infrastructure and how this relates to his prior mutual aid and anti-border work in the so-called USA. You can find a prior interview with Louis from Living and Fighting blog.

Dharma from the Public Domain with Sarah B.

August 17, 2024 by AFM Intern

Twice a year 103.3 Asheville FM changes its on-air schedule to make room for new shows and give current DJs a chance to move time slots or drop from the schedule, based on their needs. (Programming at Asheville FM is done entirely by volunteer DJs and show hosts.)

This article is part of a series introducing you to the new shows hitting our schedule.

Dharma from the Public Domain is a unique addition to the Asheville FM on-air schedule. In this educational program Sarah B. reads from Buddhist books whose copyrights have expired. Along with the reading she offers commentary punctuated with calming musical interludes, or sound meditations.

In the first episode, Sarah expresses her love for the public domain—which consists of all creative works that aren’t protected by intellectual property laws and can therefore be shared without restriction or permission—by comparing it to a playground. She reveals that the word “dharma” basically means “the teachings of the Buddha.” “No stranger to these airwaves,” Sarah has hosted two past shows at Asheville FM: Songs for Friends and Time & Other Thieves

In discussing how she picked which teaching to share on the first episode of her new show, Sarah says she was overwhelmed by the options available. She decided to choose from the titles under the first date range listed at HathiTrust.org. Their vast digital library could provide countless hours’ worth of material for future episodes!

Dharma from the Public Domain airs every Sunday morning from eight to nine. You can listen to the lastest archive here.
