August 6, 2024 by AFM Intern

Twice a year 103.3 Asheville FM changes its on-air schedule to make room for new shows and give current DJs a chance to move time slots or drop from the schedule, based on their needs. (Programming at Asheville FM is done entirely by volunteer DJs and show hosts.)

Ghosts of the Neon Arcade with DJ RussBaby

August 5, 2024 by AFM Intern

Twice a year 103.3 Asheville FM changes its on-air schedule to make room for new shows and give current DJs a chance to move time slots or drop from the schedule, based on their needs. (Programming at Asheville FM is done entirely by volunteer DJs and show hosts.)

This article is part of a series introducing you to the new shows hitting our schedule.

DJ RussBaby brings you Ghosts of the Neon Arcade, a brand new show centered around ’70s and ’80s synth tunes. Tune in for a mix of punk, new wave, synthpop, and post-punk deep cuts, as well as more popular tracks. DJ RussBaby says the show was inspired by memories of spending time (and that week’s allowance) at the local arcade with a Walkman on.

In the premiere episode, DJ RussBaby played a collection of songs by Duran Duran, SSQ, A Flock of Seagulls, Depeche Mode, and others. The show features plenty of fun, pulsing synths and makes for an exciting listening experience.

Ghosts of the Neon Arcade airs on Sundays at 11am.

Exciting News at 12 Baskets!

August 5, 2024 by AFM Intern

Written By Malachi Mena

12 Baskets Café is excited to share new opportunities and an expansion of community services. They have been working even harder than usual to provide Asheville citizens with more access to food!

On AFM News Hour, Patrick Battle spoke with Ben Williamson of the Asheville Poverty Initiative about major service expansions at 12 Baskets. Williamson began by sharing some background on 12 Baskets Café. They opened in 2016 and served lunch every weekday. Now they are excited to sell groceries along with meals, four days a week. (they’re closed on Wednesdays). This is a major shift for the café, as they were previously only able to serve strictly meals or strictly groceries each day. Williamson said that the café staff and volunteers have worked diligently at doubling access to food for the community. Through a process of trial and error, they are now serving record numbers!

Throughout all of this, 12 Baskets has strived to maintain its community building, fulfilling the primary part of their mission. Williamson said, “We just want people to come in and have a seat, and be waited on, and be welcomed, and be included . . .” 12 Baskets wants to invite the community to stop by and enjoy a hot meal, grab some food to go, and sign up for groceries. You can stop and chat with new faces and enjoy the café’s garden. There’s a lot going on at 12 Baskets and they would love for people to be a part of it! They welcome all!

All these exciting changes come with expenses. In order to raise money, the Asheville Poverty Initiative will be hosting Westival: A Food Experience for the West of Us on September 28 from 4PM to 8PM. The fundraiser will be held at Archetype Brewing and will feature twelve West Asheville-based food providers. Restaurants such as Rocky’s Hot Chicken Shack and West Village Market will take part! The Asheville Poverty Initiative really wanted to be community inclusive and child friendly to celebrate West Asheville.

For more information on 12 Baskets Café and the Asheville Poverty Initiative, check out https://www.ashevillepovertyinitiative.org/  and listen to the latest episode of AFM News Hour.

"TFSR 8-4-24 | The No-State Solution (with Mohammed Bamyeh, ACAB2024)" alongside a shirt looking like a college sports log reading "The No-State Solution" and details about the presentation

This week we’re sharing audio from Dr. Mohammed Bamyeh’s presentation entitled “The No-State Solution” as recorded at the 2024 Another Carolina Anarchist Bookfair in so-called Asheville, NC. There is a youtube video of this chat available on the Firestorm Books channel.  Shuli Branson’s current podcast is The Breakup Theory and she also authored a zine by the same title as this presentation. You can find the full version of the presentation at our website.

A prior presentation of this title appeared at The Victoria Anarchist Bookfair, a discussion between Dr. Bamyeh and Dr. Uri Gordon. You can find a video or a zine of the dialogue.

SCI Fayette hunger strike

According to incarcerated activists in SCI-Fayette in Luzerne Township, Pennsylvania, there are plans to initiate a peaceful hunger strike starting with breakfast on August 5th, 2024, to protest lack of out-of-cell time, locked down for laundry, commissary and evening recreation time during which they can contact family and friends. More on the details in our show notes to support their hunger strike demands.

The brothers at SCI-FAYETTE are planning a peaceful resistance 2 strike all the meals beginning the morning of 8/5/2024 because administration is continuing 2 limit our time out of the cell on the unit, as if we’re in a pandemic. This is the only facility n PADOC that are doing pandemic procedures. Continues to take from us. Creating problems & hostile environment. The men are tired of being locked down for commissary, laundry & now they’re restricting are evening recreation. For most inmates that’s the only time we can contact are family & friends. We want full day room recreation (no cohorts) on every housing unit 7:45-10-30am, 1:15-3:35pm & 5:00pm-8:30pm & more seats on the housing unit 2 accommodate the seating arrangements. We need their help on the outside to call #724-364-2200 & speak up 4 us.

Administration likes to keep matters like this in-house & hope we don’t have any outside support.

Please support us?

LAVENDER BLUE IS… the vessel for the songwriting and guitar playing of Kayla Zuskin. PRESS
“With a lovely use of pedal steel guitar, reverb, and a dreamy vocal performance, the effect is something that captures a wistful sense of melancholic and looming loss, perfect for the chilly and lonely days of winter, let alone in the current stage of this never-ending pandemic, where we have all been forced to indeed, slow down.”- We All Want Someone to Shout For
Underlying themes of folk and soft-rock brings House on a Highway by Lavender Blue. The song lies out gentleness in the most reposeful way— still breeze, total reminiscence. This is what it feels like to fall in love, finding home in someone and within yourself.-Start Tracks“Zuskin’s plaintive vocals firmly placed underneath sand waves of slightly off-kilter guitar chords, and instrumental crescendos being teased but not acted upon every once in a while. By the end of the song, though, she’s done with teasing – instead, she lets an unexpected guitar solo rip out. It’s not bombast for the sake of it but a way to finish the song in a determined and tenacious way.- High Clouds.org““Beware” embodies the unique style of Lavender Blue, summoning both dark and light to create its own atmosphere.”-American Pancake“Grace and subtlety are the hallmarks of this understated collection of songs.”-Mountain Xpress
