Open Air: WNC Health Policy Initiative

October 4, 2023 by Open Air Staff

Today on Open Air, we’ll hear from the WNC Health Policy Initiative podcast. Tune in live on Weds at noon or hear it in our archives for two weeks after broadcast!

School Meals as an Intervention for Food Insecurity in WNC

The Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) identifies food insecurity as a “non-medical factor that influences health outcomes,” which is also known as a social determinant of health. From long-term impacts associated with “developmental, economic, social” factors, to diet-related illnesses such as cardiovascular disease or diabetes, food insecurity has an impact on health (as noted by the World Health Organization on their 2021 Malnutrition Factsheet).

In NC, following a 2022 submission to the NC Medical Journal, one in six children are food insecure, and seen in the USDA’s Food Access Research Atlas, over 1.6 million North Carolinians live in a food desert where healthy foods are not accessible. Since 2012, NC saw an increase in the number of food deserts.

For WNC in particular, the WNC Health Network (WNCHN) found that “the percent of adults in WNC consuming 5+ fruits and vegetables per day has decreased from 8% in 2015 to 5.6% in 2021” and “more than half of very low-income adults in WNC have experienced food insecurity in the past year.” Data collected by the WNCHN also shows that rates of cardiovascular disease and Type 2 Diabetes in WNC are consistently higher than the rest of NC and the country.

To improve health outcomes in our region associated with food insecurities, the NC Alliance for Health (NCAH) supports a Free School Meals for All program to work as a preventative strategy. In this installment of the HPI Podcast, Andrew Rainey speaks with Marianne Weant and Alecia Sanders of the NCAH about food insecurity, the School Meals for All Campaign, what we learned from implementing a similar program in NC during COVID, political challenges, and both state and local considerations for implementation. Check out the website at wnchealthpolicy.org for more installments of the HPI podcast and to learn more about public health issues in WNC.

Ukrainian + Belarusian Perspectives on Resisting Russian Invasion

Ukrainian + Belarusian Perspectives on Resisting Russian Invasion

Graffiti in support of Lesho, Chia & Harris fallen fighting in Ukraine against the Russian invasion

The following is the first half of a presentation by anarchists from Ukraine and Belarus, alongside a question and answer portion with the audience, conducted in part via live translation services. This panel is facilitated in part by Nina of Anarchist Black Cross Dresden, and features presentations by Masha (Belarus) an anarchist in Warsaw, Nastya is a member of Solidarity Zone (not speaking on behalf of that group), Mira from Anarchist Black Cross Kyiv and Solidarity Collectives and Boris of Belarus Anarchist Black Cross. The rest full audio can be found at our blog.

The discussion, much like previous discussions by anarchists supporting anti-authoritarians joining the armed defense against the Russian invasion, was interrupted a number of times by pacifists or others who didn’t want a discussion of the complexities of joining the territorial defense forces to have space. Those interruptions were mostly not recorded as they happened off-mic, but you’ll hear the reactions to them. I felt like this audio was important to share here with the audience, particularly in spite of their silencing.

I recorded this at the 2023 St-Imier anarchist gathering on the 151st anniversary of the first anarchist and anti-authoritarian Workers International, following the purges by Marxists and Blanquists. Like the first one in 1872 hosted by the Jura Federation, this gathering was hosted in small village of St-Imier with a population of 4,000 being nearly doubled in size over the course of 5 days of workshops, concerts, discussions, food, film showings and tablings.

You can find reflections from some folks at crimethinc.com, alongside a link to recordings from the live, multi-lingual radio broadcast throughout the event and the website for the gathering where you’ll see lists of happenings from the week. Hopefully in the near future you’ll be able to find the recordings of the presentations that got recorded such as this one, some in video and some in audio.

I’ll be reflecting on some of this in an upcoming episode of the ItsGoingDown podcast while speaking with my friend and former co-host Scott Branson about how the bookfair here in Asheville went. Here’s an article (in French) about an Islamophobic scandal that occurred with members of the French Anarchist Federation (Kropotkin).

Past interviews on the subjects of:

  • Belarus
  • Ukraine
  • Russia
