The Southern Equality Fund, a program of the Campaign for Southern Equality, provides general grants of up to $500 throughout the year, as well as special grant rounds focused on critical and emerging issues in the LGBTQ South. Funding for the 2020 cycle opened up this week, and News Team correspondent KP Whaley had a chance to learn more about the funding opportunities.
The Asheville Area Arts Council is in the process of moving to a new building and working on changing their mission. They are moving their headquarters to the heart of downtown to promote their mission of “art at the heart of the community.” News Team Intern Delaney Marth talked with the Executive Director earlier this week.
Local band, The Screaming J’s, jammed at the Wedge at Foundation this past weekend. A couple of the band members met with Nathan Duvall to talk about the history of the band and to discuss the show.
Local organization Community Roots is working on a voter initiative petition to get Asheville 100% renewable by the year 2030. Scott met with Community Roots canvasser Gerry to talk about the petition.
On February 1st, Sunshine Pugh, a student from Odyssey School, is hosting an event with a group of classmates to promote body positivity through the use of art and recycled clothing. News Team correspondent Scott Owen met with Sunshine to discuss the event.

This week Asheville will be inundated by theater of the strangest kind. The 18th annual Asheville Fringe Arts Festival kicks off this week boasting around 50 shows through the week at 16 venues in town – the festival also provides pop up performances and artistic creativity that is very non-traditional. Fringe Fest board member Jen Murphy joined us last week to discuss what makes this festival so unique.
