Organic Grower School Spring Conference and Local Food Shed

February 20, 2021 by Alena Talbot

The Coronavirus Pandemic has exposed weaknesses in many of our systems, including our food system.  Mari (MARY) Stuart is an Urban Homesteader and writer who believes eating more locally is a better food system model.  She is presenting a talk about shifting your food consumption to eat more locally at this year’s Organic Grower School Spring Conference, and she joined us for a preview of that talk earlier this week.

That was Mari Stuart, an ecological landscape designer, educator, writer, and carbon farming project manager living in Asheville. A former Humanities professor, she now works in ecological landscape design, specializing in climate-resilient landscapes and climate-friendly agriculture planning. She is a regular contributor to Edible Asheville Magazine and the Mother Earth News blog, and writes about gardening, foraging, and modern homesteading at Make Gather Grow.

LGBTQ nondiscrimination ordinances in Asheville

February 20, 2021 by Alena Talbot

In North Carolina, LGBTQ people are vulnerable to discrimination in core areas of life, including employment, housing, healthcare settings, and public spaces like restaurants and stores. That’s because of a lack of comprehensive nondiscrimination protections at the state and federal level – and because of HB142, a law which for years prohibited cities and towns from passing their own LGBTQ-inclusive nondiscrimination ordinances.

Parts of that law expired at the end of 2020, municipalities in North Carolina have regained the ability to enact nondiscrimination ordinances and cities across the state are doing just that.  News team correspondent, KP Whaley wanted to learn if Asheville City council was considering passing such an ordinance and spoke this week with newly elected council woman, Kim Roney about the issue.
