Table for Two with DJ Hot Probs and DJ HMU

July 31, 2024 by AFM Intern

Twice a year 103.3 Asheville FM changes its on-air schedule to make room for new shows and give current DJs a chance to move time slots or drop from the schedule, based on their needs. (Programming at Asheville FM is done entirely by volunteer DJs and show hosts.)

This article is part of a series introducing you to the new shows hitting our schedule.

Table for Two is a brand new community-driven dating talk show! Co-hosts DJ Hot Probs and DJ HMU, along with the show’s resident supervisor, are excited to talk weekly on Tuesdays at 7pm. The show is narrative based and will incorporate stories and personal experiences, allowing for dialogue and community participation.

In the pilot episode, DJ Hot Probs expressed that Table for Two will allow for some psychoeducation as all three hosts have experience helping others articulate feelings they may not otherwise know how to express. Both hosts then went on to describe love and to explore the inner workings of love and romance. DJ Hot Probs, DJ HMU, and the resident supervisor look forward to talking in the next episode and expressed their thanks.

Table for Two airs on Tuesdays at 7pm.

Housing Development in Haw Creek – A talk with David Forbes

July 30, 2024 by AFM Intern

Written by Malachi Mena

The Asheville City Council met Tuesday, July 23rd, to discuss a few different matters, primarily focusing on housing developments in Haw Creek. The meeting went on for over four hours and addressed other matters, including the Woolworth building, general obligation bonds, and community development.

On AFM News Hour, host KP Whaley spoke to David Forbes, journalist for The Asheville Blade, who was in attendance at the Council meeting. Forbes explained that the majority of the meeting was focused on the 27 acres of land in Haw Creek that was proposed for housing development. According to Forbes a majority of the land is mature forest, and they expressed the rarity of such a thing in the city of Asheville. Controversy has been sparked regarding this housing plan since last year and Forbes made clear that the controversy is still very much present.

Forbes explained that supposedly 2 of the 84 housing units will be considered affordable. They said the other 82 will be on the market for $500,000 or more. While the city is claiming this development will provide housing, members of the community have expressed that said housing will not be affordable. Forbes pointed out that people in Asheville with a modest salary simply cannot jump into a half-million-dollar home. They went on to explain that these new homes would likely go to wealthy people who can afford multiple houses or be turned into Airbnbs. Forbes goes on to state, “This isn’t trickle-down economics. We need affordable housing. We need housing people can actually live in and have some stability and autonomy.”

Most of the neighborhood that spoke up about the situation said they did not approve and that the deal was decided in secret, according to Forbes. Ultimately though, the developers’ request was granted, five to one. Forbes went on to speak about the Asheville City Government and transit, parks, and sidewalks. They explained that unfortunately much of the funding towards these things will either be invested someplace else or go towards the wealthier parts of Asheville.

For more on the conversation and a deeper look at the City Council meeting, listen to this week’s episode of AFM News Hour.

Southeastern Permaculture Gathering This Weekend!

July 30, 2024 by AFM Intern

Written by Malachi Mena

The Southeastern Permaculture Gathering is taking place this weekend, August 2–4. With plenty of activities, workshops, classes and more, attendees can expect to truly reconnect with nature!

On AFM News Hour, Patrick Battle spoke with Dr. Richard McDonald to discuss details on the upcoming Southeast Permaculture Gathering. McDonald shared some of the exciting activities and events that took place at previous gatherings, such as an herb walk, mushroom walk, bio-charm-making class, song craft workshop, and a farmscaping demonstration.

McDonald explained that all event attendees are expected to pitch in and contribute to the success of the event. Everyone is assigned around four hours of work time, either in prepping food, assisting in ceremony setup, washing dishes, or other tasks. McDonald said that this helps foster interaction between attendees. This social interaction with others is what has helped him learn something new every year, for the past 30 years!

This year’s gathering will take place at Hawk and Hawthorne. This is a new location for the event, and McDonald assured all that the venue has a great layout. With a fire pit, a barn where classes will be held, and camping spots, Hawk and Hawthorne can accommodate around 150 people. But McDonald expressed that the intimacy of the gathering won’t be compromised: “By the end of the weekend, when we circle up, you’re gonna look around and you’ll know almost everybody’s name, or you’ll know something about them.”

McDonald made clear that the Southeastern Permaculture Gathering is not a conference; it involves camping, as opposed to hotels or other housing. Those who need indoor accommodations can check https://www.hawkandhawthorne.com/ for help. Attendees can also specify dietary needs and restrictions when registering on the Southeastern Permaculture website.

For more on the event, listen to July 24th’s episode of the AFM News Hour or check out https://www.southeasternpermaculture.org/.

Grupa Granica Activsists Speak About Perils on the Belarus / Poland Border

"TFSR 7-28-24 | Grupa Granica Activists Speak About Perils on the Belarus / Poland Border" featuring a photo of masked Polish soldiers and border guards looming over people on the move, centrally two children, in Bialoweza forest

This week, we’re featuring an interview with Dominika Ożyńska (Egala Association) and Aleksandra Chrzanowska (Association for Legal Intervention [polish: Stowarzyszenie Interwencji Prawnej SIP]), two human rights activists in eastern Poland near the Belarus border who speak about the situation with the migrant route through the Białowieża forest in the midst of increased militarization on both sides of the border through this ancient forest and through the region. Both are active in the umbrella Grupa Granica, or border group, movement supporting people on the move. You can learn more from the links in our show notes. The full podcast can be found at our website.

In coming weeks we hope to feature more conversations with activists on the ground in this region and elsewhere speaking on similar topics, including locals who’ve seen social and environmental changes as tensions build between the neighboring nation-states and international alliances and how it impacts people seeking asylum and engaging their freedom of movement.

Mission Nurses’ Strike on the Horizon

July 24, 2024 by AFM Intern

By Malachi Mena

Mission nurses are talking of a potential strike due to staffing issues. Activists in the area are attempting to help these nurses by raising money in case of a strike.

On Open Air’s series, People’s Radio Hour, Rosemary Lord joined Jennifer Hampton to discuss the strike and how they’re working to support the Mission nurses union. Lord explained that as a longtime socialist, supporting workers is one of her key values. After Lord moved to Asheville, they heard about how Mission Hospital had changed after being purchased by the Hospital Corporation of America, which they described as a major issue for the community. It was really important to Lord to be a part of the effort that would help the nurses organize for a new contract.

Hampton went on to describe Lord as a “powerhouse of an organizer,” mentioning all their work with Asheville Food & Beverage United, the Asheville chapter of the Democratic Socialists of America, and the canvassing efforts for the tourism taxes for affordable housing. Lord responded, claiming that the affordable housing issue and the Mission nurses issue seemed connected. They said, “It’s all about the fact that Asheville could easily be a place that works for working people. There’s enough money coming in here. There’s enough resources for everybody, but the problem is it’s not distributed in an equitable way.”

The two then went on to discuss why the nurses need a strike fund and Mission’s policies and regulations. For more on the topic, listen to the second half of this week’s episode of Open Air.

Elizabeth Alvandi – a victim with a dutiful desire to speak up

July 24, 2024 by AFM Intern

Written by Jordan Lenoir

Please note descriptions of physical and sexual violence may be triggering for some listeners/readers.

In this fresh new episode of People’s Radio Hour on Open Air, host Jennifer Hampton is joined by Elizabeth Alvandi to discuss her recent feature in a Citizen Times article (published last Sunday) in which she discussed the violence in public housing communities and the lack of response from the Housing Authority or the Asheville Police Department.

Alvandi herself is a public housing resident, whom Hampton says has faced “some pretty harrowing instances of violence and assault, and if not for her incredible talent for documentation, there would likely have been no consequences for her attacker.” Alvandi asserts that “one of the reasons I am speaking up about my story is not necessarily because it’s so unique. I think what’s unique is that I am maybe a bit better positioned to speak out. I have experienced a bit of retaliation.” She goes on to say, “[The] Housing [Authority] should do more.” It is not only women who have experienced this violence, but men as well. Alvandi “believes this is something a lot of people have experienced.”

In this episode of Open Air, Alvandi also shares a traumatic event she experienced on September 20th, 2022, when she was violently assaulted outside her home in Deaverview. She shares that she had had a number of run-ins with her attacker, Jeremiah Jenkins, and instantly recognized him.

Alvandi then goes on to share that even though Jenkins was banned from the community, she and other residents still spotted him occasionally. She states, “I told my site manager that I had been threatened by this man… And instead of informing me that he’s on the ban list [and] he shouldn’t be here, she said, ‘Oh, that doesn’t sound like him,’ indicating she knew of him and thought he was better than that.”

Thank you, Elizabeth Alvandi, for sharing your story and spreading awareness about public housing violence.

For more on this topic, listen to the rest of this week’s Open Air episode.
