ABOUT THE BAND: The Knotty G’s

Gill & Chuck Knott are the core of the funky and fun-loving group, The Knotty G’s. They sometimes call on a wide range of musical companions, to form everything from a duo to a full band. Established in Asheville, NC, The Knotty G’s travel the country sharing their Soul-Soaked Americana music, serving up a hearty, original recipe of pan-seared, boot-stomping-upbeat tunes, slow-cooked, captivating ballads, and even a few beaten, battered, deep-fried covers. Nothing short of a stir fry of fun, these characters can certainly satisfy even the biggest of musical appetites.

Harm Reduction and Eco-defense in Appalachia

February 18, 2024 by bogoodness

Project Mayday logo featuring a badger and crossed needles, a photo of an MVP site at Peters Mountain with a zoom in on Madeline Ffitch locked down + "TFSR 2-18-24 | Harm Reduction + Eco-Defense in Appalachia"

First up, Ian chats with Tasha of Project Mayday, a harm reduction project operating in so-called West Virginia. They discuss harm reduction strategies and the political framework of their approach to mutual aid. The conversation also touches upon co-existing in the public health and non-profit space without compromising their radical values and some of the many ways that drug policy and pharmaceutical marketing affect people who use drugs. Listeners can contact Project Mayday at the links below and should watch those spaces for news about the benefit show coming up on April 28th.

Then, I spoke with Toby from Appalachians Against Pipelines and Madeline Ffitch, an activist recently arrested for locking down to a drill threatening to move the Mountain Valley Pipeline through Peters Mountain at Jefferson National Forest. We talked about the recent days of solidarity, direct actions against the MVP, repression of activists and related topics.

If you want to check out the rest of our conversation about the MVP, you can find the full chat at our website.

Our Cousin TL

February 17, 2024 by KP Whaley

It is with the deepest sadness that we must inform you that our Cousin TL, died today, February 17th, after a year-long battle with a rare, incurable cancer. He was only 53 years old.

Stank Free Radio has been a Saturday night staple on 103.3 since 2014. Many people in Asheville and around the country and world spent Saturday nights with TL. Throughout the past year of advanced chemo treatments, TL still produced Stank Free Radio from his home studio. There is no replacing TL, on the air, or in life.

Not only was Cousin TL an award-winning DJ but he also served on our Board of Directors, and held many other important volunteer positions over the years. In many ways, Asheville FM was his life and he was the life of our station.

Cousin TL has signed off for the last time, and will be terribly missed. We send our thoughts and prayers to his family and the love of his life, Donetta.

Listeners are invited to share their tributes, memories, song requests, and love for Cousin TL and Donetta in a voice message by calling 828-407-0404 or using the Talk2Us feature on the Asheville FM app.

A link to a fundraiser for celebration of life expenses can be found at our website, ashevillefm.org

In the words of TL, ‘Peace, Two Fingers’.
