Court and Spark!

Join host Bill Kopp for an evening of discussion about Joni Mitchell, sponsored by Asheville FM! Hear tracks from one of the greatest singer-songwriter album’s of all time, and have your questions ready, on Wednesday, November 1st at 7PM at Asheville Guitar Bar.

Hugely influential, Mitchell’s 1974 release, helped point the way for artists across the entire musical spectrum. Even beyond the album’s most well-known tracks, Court and Spark is filled with adventurous musicality, incisive songwriting and dazzling arrangements.

Bill Kopp will be joined by award-winning musician, singer-songwriter Eleanor Underhill. Eleanor is a high profile and beloved fixture of the Western North Carolina music scene and beyond. Underhill will share what Mitchell’s music means to her and how it helped guide her own musical pursuits.

Bonus Open Air: Dennis McNett aka Wolfbat

In a special bonus hour of Open Air this Weds, Oct 25 at 1 p.m., we’re excited to be joined by artist Dennis McNett, who is in Asheville creating community art in support of the Foundation Skate Park. McNett’s annual HalloWolfbat event took place Saturday at the Orange Peel, with giant puppets battling in the crowd as metal bands thrashed on stage.

This week, McNett is hosting a series of mask-making workshops at New Belgium Brewery, culminating in a Halloween Procession on Saturday the 28th at the Foundation Skate Park.

Open Air: The People’s Radio Hour

Wednesday at noon on The People’s Radio Hour: Housing & Wages in WNC, we’ll hear from Susan Bean, Housing & Transportation Director for MountainTrue, and Adrienne Micelli, local service worker and current Asheville Food and Beverage Union member.
Susan Bean is on the city’s Planning & Zoning Committee, and will discuss the bike lanes on Patton & College, the new Aspire project and the city’s Missing Middle study. Susan moved to Asheville in 2011 and applied her program and leadership development skills as the program director for Leadership Asheville for four years before joining MountainTrue as their Community Engagement Director.
Adrienne Micelli has a very compelling story about ageism in the food service industry as well as the struggle workers face after decades of strain on our bodies. Adrienne has worked in the service industry her whole life in one way or another, from working retail or restaurants to owning her own hair salon. Despite decades of experience, she is having tremendous difficulty finding work over the past several months. We’re going to talk about why that might be.

We were so happy to hear our Cousin TL last weekend with a new episode of Stank Free Radio, Saturday October 14th. As many of you know our cousin is battling cancer and we’re so glad he was feeling good enough not only to give us a new show, but also help us raise some money during our Fall Fund Drive. Asheville FM Seeks Board Members

We are pleased to announce that 103.3 Asheville FM is looking for members of our community to serve as Board members to guide our vision and fulfill our inclusive and progressive mission. The Mission of Asheville FM is to keep Asheville thriving by producing diverse and eclectic programming that inspires our listeners to build connections across our communities and to discover new music and ideas. We do this by producing diverse, insightful and relevant news, talk, sports and music programming.

Board members attend meetings (6 per year) and serve on a committee and participate in fundraising, with the primary responsibility of providing leadership, vision and direction. Board members also develop and recruit volunteer leaders, oversee and procure financial resources, support our executive director, staff and volunteers; and ensure that programming achieves AFM’s mission. Asheville FM is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit corporation.

Being on the board of Asheville FM is rewarding in so many ways! And fun! In addition to helping guide an important community resource, you will be making connections with other volunteers in our family and the Asheville community in general, and also learning about how local community radio serves the Asheville area. Asheville FM is a vibrant organization, our station is solvent and growing; and we need intelligent, passionate leaders to help shape our future.

Board members also attend our casual station get-togethers and other functions and get to know the members of our extended family.

As an organization that celebrates diverse voices, we especially seek women, and members of disabled, BIPOC, LGBTQ, and other historically marginalized communities.
