Rojava, War, Imperialism, and Defense

October 13, 2019 by bogoodness

Airs on WSFM-LP 103.3 in Asheville / streaming at AshevilleFM from 3am EST on October 14th through October 20th, 2019 and podcasting on libsyn.com.

Rojava, War, Imperialism, and Defense

For this episode we spoke with Gönül Düzer, who is a labor activist, math teacher, and a board member of the Kurdish Cultural Center in Chicago. Gönül was willing to take the time to speak on the current Turkish invasion of Northeast Syria, some history that would be useful to keep in mind when considering current events in this region, the complex tensions of being an anti imperialist and calling for US support, and about the Global Day of Action on this Saturday October 12th against this current invasion into NE Syria which has been brought about by actions by the US and many many more topics.. She also talks about Rojava, the role that this region plays in the area, and some ideas about how to get involved against the current invasion.

A content warning for this episode, Gönül describes many brutal actions on the part of Daesh or ISIS, including rape and sexual assault. The descriptions are not graphic but may be difficult to engage with.

This interview originally aired on our podcast feed a few days ago in anticipation of the Global Day of Action for Rojava and against Turkish and US imperialism which occurred on October 12 2019, which was yesterday as of the first airing of this interview on Asheville FM. To hear more of this interview, a full version of which aired on our podcast feed a few days ago, you can always go to our blog at thefinalstrawradio.noblogs.org for this and our full archives.

You can go to the Rojava Information Center at rojavainformationcenter.com, @RojavaIC on Twitter, for on the ground updates about this situation.

You can also visit the following link for a way to support the Rojava Medical Emergency Fund. Since the majority of medical NGOs have pulled out of the region, it has become necessary to pull together whatever medical needs fighters may have from a rapidly diminishing resource pool. This fund is for on the ground medical supplies and secure communication equipment for those people defending NE Syria.

We end the show with some audio submitted by a listener of a pro Rojava rally held yesterday on the Global Day of Action in Chicago, IL.

. … . ..

Music for this episode:

Bella Ciao – Kurdish version by Chia Madani
Song for Tekosina Anarsist

Kendal Maniš-Marşi – Rojava (Destane Kobane)

Congrats to Volunteer of the Quarter, Lady D!

October 11, 2019 by Jess Speer

DJ Lady D, Volunteer of the Quarter (Summer 2019), in her own words:

I learned about the radio station a couple of years ago when I was driving around Asheville going record shopping. I scanned through the radio dial and came across a station that was playing actual music. That station happened to be Asheville FM.

Even though I was living in South Carolina at the time, I decided to volunteer with AFM because I thought the station was AWESOME! In the past, I had considered volunteering at the community radio station in my hometown of Tampa, Florida, but never did. Finding out that AFM functions with the help of volunteers, I thought that this would be a great opportunity to become involved and help bring awesome diverse radio to people.

Initially when I joined the station I wanted to be involved in production, but I loved the station so much it truly didn’t matter what I did, I just wanted to help. I started tabling at events to help spread the word about how great AFM is, then after shadowing radio shows, I started writing music album reviews.

I was hesitant to apply for my own radio program, as I felt comfortable behind the scenes, but after encouragement from other volunteers and DJs, I got the confidence to apply for a show as well.

Later, the opportunity arose to help with the Production Department, when the former Production Coordinator held a meeting requesting for volunteers to get involved with the department. I inquired about the Production Coordinator position (as the former head was moving out of state) and ended up falling into the roll when they left.

So currently at the radio station, I am the Production Coordinator and I also host a Sunday afternoon radio show called Electro Retro.

The best advice I can give new volunteers is to do your best. Don’t be afraid to ask questions for a better understanding of things or what you would like to be involved in. Give the amount of time that you are able to give as well, because every contribution of time you make to the station helps it thrive.

There are too many folks to shout out to because there are so many people here that have helped me, and that are so devoted to the station as a whole. I love all of the people here that I’ve met and truly would not have the opportunity to do what I do here without their support. To all of you reading this, you’re amazing! Thank you for all that you do!

My favorite things about the station are the awesome volunteers that are here, the great music that the DJs play, and the awesome talk shows that we have. I love everything about it honestly. AFM has been so influential in my life. Again, I thank you all!
