Asheville FM Seeks Board Members

Asheville FM Seeks Board Members

October 9, 2023 by KP Whaley

We are pleased to announce that 103.3 Asheville FM is looking for members of our community to serve as Board members to guide our vision and fulfill our inclusive and progressive mission. The Mission of Asheville FM is to keep Asheville thriving by producing diverse and eclectic programming that inspires our listeners to build connections across our communities and to discover new music and ideas. We do this by producing diverse, insightful and relevant news, talk, sports and music programming.

Board members attend meetings (6 per year) and serve on a committee and participate in fundraising, with the primary responsibility of providing leadership, vision and direction. Board members also develop and recruit volunteer leaders, oversee and procure financial resources, support our executive director, staff and volunteers; and ensure that programming achieves AFM’s mission. Asheville FM is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit corporation.

Being on the board of Asheville FM is rewarding in so many ways! And fun! In addition to helping guide an important community resource, you will be making connections with other volunteers in our family and the Asheville community in general, and also learning about how local community radio serves the Asheville area. Asheville FM is a vibrant organization, our station is solvent and growing; and we need intelligent, passionate leaders to help shape our future.

Board members also attend our casual station get-togethers and other functions and get to know the members of our extended family.

As an organization that celebrates diverse voices, we especially seek women, and members of disabled, BIPOC, LGBTQ, and other historically marginalized communities. Please consider a seat on our Board today! We would love the opportunity to share our future plans with you. Please send your email of interest to [email protected] and we will send you a short application.

Thank you for your consideration!

Out Here For Them: Updates As Prairieland Federal Trial Ends

March 29, 2026 by bogoodness

This week we spoke with AC and E, two members of the DFW Support Committee about the recently finished federal trial for 9 defendants in the terrorism case around the Prairieland Detention Center noise demo in July of 2025.

To hear a slightly longer episode, check out the podcast at our website or on the various streaming services.

To recap the case, in the midst of increased racist and nativist rhetoric, ICE and CBP snatch squad deployments ripping apart communities across the US in the first year of Trump 2.0, and the buildup of immigrant rendition and imprisonment in the southwest there was a July 4th noise demonstration called for to happen outside the infamous Prairieland Detention Center outside Alvarado, Texas. During the protest, meant to be loud enough for people held there to hear that they were not forgotten, participants used bullhorns, shouted, shot off fireworks and painted slogans. In response the staff called the Alvarado police and upon arrival the cop drew his weapon and aimed at dispersing protestors. At this point the state narrative and that of the defendants diverge: on the one hand the state argues that this whole event was a planned ambush for law enforcement by a north Texas Antifa terrorist cell in black bloc meant to draw police into a fight and then liberate the prison; on the other side the defendants claim the event was escalated to targeted gunfire by defendant Song meant to deter deadly violence by the cop and allow the crowd to disperse without bloodshed.

For the hour, you’ll hear folks from DFW Defense Committee talking about what evidence and arguments were presented in court, what evidence and arguments were suppressed, the strange decisions of the judge in jury selection, venue and other elements effecting the ability of those facing decades in prison to mount and defense and where we’re at now with the case. This case cannot be disconnected from the Trump administration’s call to name Antifa as a domestic terrorist organization, to tie in projects and movements they consider to be enemies (ranging from Democrats to civil liberties groups, queer folk and immigrants rights advocates to anti-fascists, communists and anarchists and everyone in between) with the goal, some speculate, of more fully capturing the federal government under a white, christian nationalist and fascist regime. More on the case at PrairielandDefendants.Com

A couple of useful links for the case:

Next week, keep an ear out for a chat we plan to release with Nina of Anarchist Black Cross Dresden about the impacts of naming German antifascists as terrorists by the Trump Regime on the ability of various leftist, anti-repression groups there to do their work, to hold bank accounts for sending money to prisoners or pay for lawyers and about the shift towards the right electorally and politically that is being experienced in that country. You may be surprised about the parallels with the situation in the US.

Liaizon Wakest on Autonomous Social Media and the Fediverse

March 27, 2026 by bogoodness

Liaizon Wakest on Autonomous Social Media and the Fediverse

proposed vediverse logo of multicolor pentagon/pentagram with logos for 6 different fediverse projects around it

This week, we spoke with Liaizon Wakest. Liaizon grew up in an anarchist commune in rural America. They can be found climbing into dumpsters from Mexico to Kazakhstan looking for trash to make art with. In recent years they have been focused on research into ethical technology and infrastructural anarchism. For the hour we speak about the interoperable, open source ensemble of federated online publishing servers and platforms known as the Fediverse and its most popular component, Mastodon. This conversation takes place in the context of media hullabaloo about Elon Musk seeking to purchase Twitter, the paradigm in which a rich egomaniac can own the addictive social media platforms over which so much social and political life is engaged and what positives we can draw from alternatives like Mastodon and the Fediverse.

You can hear this interview at TheFinalStrawRadio.NoBlogs.Org

  • Transcript
  • PDF (Unimposed)
  • Zine (Imposed PDF)

You can find Liaizon’s account on Mastodon (an analog of twitter) at @[email protected] or on Pixelfed (an analog of Instagram) at @[email protected]. And you can follow us on Mastodon by finding @[email protected] or by visiting https://chaos.social/@TheFinalStrawRadio in a web browser.

Another interesting anarchist media project engaging the Fediverse is Kolektiva, which has a PeerTube instance at https://Kolektiva.Media (analog of youtube) and Mastodon at https://Kolektiva.Social where they’re welcoming new users. Kolektiva includes participation from projects like Sub.Media and AntiMidia

You can find a real good interview by our comrades at From Embers about Mastodon which I mention in the interview from February 3rd, 2022 entitled Social Networks, Online Life and The Fediverse: https://fromembers.libsyn.com/social-networks-online-life-and-the-fediverse
