People’s Radio Hour Episode 4: Everyday People, Everyday Actions

February 7, 2026 by Jess Speer

A lot of people look at what’s going on in the world and feel overwhelmed because they want to do something but don’t know where to start. As Jamie Beasley, our guest last week and ED of Working Wheels pointed out, not everyone has the privilege to quit their day job and become a full-time organizer or has the capacity to start a mutual aid fund. But there are roles for all of us in community work, so today on the show we’re going to talk to some people who make community work a part of their everyday lives.

Today we’re joined by Jensen Gelfond, who offers tech support for folks at 12 Baskets Cafe every Tuesday from 10:30 to 12:30 and works with clients at Helpmate on personal cyber security. Jensen talks about how volunteering in his community has helped fill a gap between his professional work providing individualized tech support (often for well-resourced people) and his need for community, the benefits he experiences from his work at 12 Baskets Cafe and Helpmate, and advice about how to find volunteer work that fits your daily life.

In our second segment, we talk to local artist Jennifer Murphy about how she got involved with gleaning (rescuing food that would otherwise go to waste) and the importance of finding balance in your time and the joy and increased capacity that comes along with the busyness of community work.

Join us on Wednesday, Feb 11 when we talk about period poverty and local organizers who are working to make sure everyone has access to menstrual supplies.

MUSICAL GUEST:  Many A Ship

Many a Ship is an indie-folk-rock band deeply rooted in the mountains of Western North Carolina. Formed in 2017, this collection of musical friends was drawn together by Vickie Burick (Warm the Bell, Nevada), united to craft a new sound, drenched in inspiration from nature, humanity, frailty, nostalgia and love. Burick serves as the anchor to this ever changing crew of shipmates that harbor in each performance, and is joined by Josh Gibbs and Dave Desmelik (40/20/10s) for this live spotlight performance on Asheville FM 103.3. Their music is a sea of stories about life, love, heartache, truth and hope.

Science, Radical Realism, and Anarchy (with William Gillis)

January 25, 2026 by bogoodness

This week, we’re sharing an interview with Will Gillis, author of the recently published book Did The Science Wars Take Place: The Political and Ethical Stakes of Radical Realism, published via C4SS where Gillis holds the position as The Voltairine de Cleyre Chair in Centrifugal Studies and technical coordinator.

For the hour we talk about the so-called Science Wars of the 1990’s, debates involving scientific approaches and shared understandings of a a measurable physical reality, post-modernism, the roles leftists and anarchists played in the debates and how cults and authoritarians employ anti-realist explanations of the world to limit their subjects’ moves toward liberation.

To check out another 30 minutes of interview, consider the blog at our website or the subscribe-able podcast or other streaming apps linked at TFSR.Media

You can read more of William’s writings at https://humaniterations.net and https://c4ss.org
